SPX Middle School Service Group
The Service Group was formed in 2004 because so many middle school students expressed an interest in making a difference. What started out as a core group of 30 students has grown throughout the years. There initial goal was to reach out to children in poverty, they have done that and so much more throughtout the years. The group meets monthly during school. Last school year 91 students voluntarily joined the group! The goal is to do community outreach and to fundraise for Kids Against Hunger and Terra Livre in Brazil. They have been vistied by the co-founder of Terra Livre several times, she encouraged the students to be "The Power of One," That is the power to do something, to do anything. To act locally and think globally. She encouraged the students to help others, it can be as simple as helping out a classmate. She is very impressed with the students at St Pius and their continuing efforts to help others.
Two years the group raise $15,800, with 100% of that money going to help the charities. They have sponsored the Kids Against Hunger packaging over 60,000 meals during the school day for Tanzania and sent money for supplies for the St Pius X classroom at the Terra Livre school in Brazil. It has been very inspiring for all involved. Through the very short years the group has been around, they have raised over $40,000!
The focus is to raise money and awareness for children in 3rd world countries. Examples of fund raisers are: Recycling Used Ink Cartridges & Cell Phones, Selling dinners by Super Suppers, Car Washes, The Christmas Box program (sponsoring a KAH box in someone's name) and Dress Down Days. For questions related to this group at SPX see Mrs. Anthofer or Mr. Tallman.
Our current goal is to once again sponsor a packaging event for Kids Against Hunger in March 2010.

We will continue to fnd ways to help our charities. The big news is that Terra Livre is working at building and opening the first ever TL school in 2009! St Pius X Church donated $10,000 and will have a classroom named St Pius X when the building opens! There is much more work to be done for this school....our students are up to the challenge. When asked the students are very confident they will raise the money and they will make a difference. We can all learn from these inspiring students, the leaders of tomorrow!
Other Service Opportunities
Generation of Life (G.O.L.)
Founded in the 2006-2007 school year by several St. Pius X eighth graders, G.O.L., or Generations of Life, is a pro-life club for middle school students. G.O.L. was originally a prayer group, praying for the end of abortion. Now, as the group continues to evolve, it has spread to service projects as well as prayer, actively supporting the pro-life cause. The members of G.O.L. continuously show enthusiasm in their service and are eager to make a difference in the lives of many families, mothers and babies.
Last year, G.O.L. was able to reach out to the St. Pius X Parish, School and even our community. The group held a bake sale at the end of several Masses to raise funds for our local chapter of the Gabriel Project, an organization aiding pregnant mothers in need. It was a huge success, selling every last cookie before all of the scheduled sales! Also supporting the Gabriel Project, G.O.L. hosted a book sale, taking place after several Masses and one school day. The book sale yielded approximately $300, a check that was proudly presented to the Gabriel Project board. This money went to filling the Gabriel Project's "closest" of materials that might be needed by the mothers.
G.O.L. also helped promote Grassroots Films new motion picture, "Bella." It is the heartfelt story of a mother who considered aborting her baby girl. The group put up posters around the school and parish center. Around ten members of the group attended the premier of the film.
In the upcoming school year, the group will continue selling pro-life products (bracelets, pens, pencils, T-shirts, etc) at the G.O.L. store, as they did last year. This year the store will feature this year's new T-shirt.
Meetings are held about once a month on Tuesdays during the school day. All middle school students are invited to join. If you are interested in joining G.O.L., please attend a meeting or see Mr. Tallman (7th grade) for more information
